Although we experience colour all the time, do we really understand colour? Three hundred years ago Isaac Newton showed that white light is composed of all the colours of the spectrum yet does this provide us with insight into our own personal experience of colour sensation? To answer such questions on the nature of colour this volume gathers the combined knowledge of physics, biology, history and art. It provides an exciting exploration of colour, from the diverse perspectives of experts in eight different fields of study. Their essays take us on a journey both through the sciences and the world of fine art, and they combine to give a full and rewarding view of colour.

Mind and Cosmos pdf/epub/kindle/txt ebooks
By:Thomas Nagel
Published on 2012-11-22 by Oxford University Press

Download

The modern materialist approach to life has conspicuously failed to explain such central mind-related features of our world as consciousness, intentionality, meaning, and value. This failure to account for something so integral to nature as mind, argues philosopher Thomas Nagel, is a major problem, threatening to unravel the entire naturalistic world picture, extending to biology, evolutionary theory, and cosmology. Since minds are features of biological systems that have developed through evolution, the standard materialist version of evolutionary biology is fundamentally incomplete. And the cosmological history that led to the origin of life and the coming into existence of the conditions for evolution cannot be a merely materialist history, either. An adequate conception of nature would have to explain the appearance in the universe of materially irreducible conscious minds, as such. Nagel's skepticism is not based on religious belief or on a belief in any definite alternative. InMind and Cosmos, he does suggest that if the materialist account is wrong, then principles of a different kind may also be at work in the history of nature, principles of the growth of order that are in their logical form teleological rather than mechanistic. In spite of the great achievements of the physical sciences, reductive materialism is a world view ripe for displacement. Nagel shows that to recognize its limits is the first step in looking for alternatives, or at least in being open to their possibility.

Henri Poincare's Science and Method is an examination of the process scientists go through when determining which of the countless facts before them will be most useful in advancing scientific knowledge. In this highly readable text-first published in 1908 and here presented in a 1914 translation by Francis Maitland-Poincare investigates mathematics, logic, physics, mechanics, and astronomy and discusses how the methods of selection differ with each field. Topics discussed include: [ the selection of facts [ the future of mathematics [ chance [ the relativity of space [ mathematics and logic [ mechanics and radium [ mechanics and optics [ the new mechanics and astronomy [ the Milky Way and the theory of gases [ and much more.

Integrated Disaster Science and Management: Global Case Studies in Mitigation and Recovery bridges the gap between scientific research on natural disasters and the practice of disaster management. It examines natural hazards, including earthquakes, landslides and tsunamis, and uses integrated disaster management techniques, quantitative methods and big data analytics to create early warning models to mitigate impacts of these hazards and reduce the risk of disaster. It also looks at mitigation as part of the recovery process after a disaster, as in the case of the Nepal earthquake. Edited by global experts in disaster management and engineering, the book offers case studies that focus on the critical phases of disaster management. Identifies advanced techniques and models based on natural disaster science for forecasting disasters and analyzing risk Offers a holistic approach to the problem of disaster management, including preparation, recovery, and resilience Includes coverage of social, economic, and environmental impacts on disasters

Falling for Science pdf/epub/kindle/txt ebooks
By:Sherry Turkle
Published on 2008 by MIT Press

|This is a book about science, technology, and love,| writes Sherry Turkle. In it, we learn how a love for science can start with a love for an object—a microscope, a modem, a mud pie, a pair of dice, a fishing rod. Objects fire imagination and set young people on a path to a career in science. In this collection, distinguished scientists, engineers, and designers as well as twenty-five years of MIT students describe how objects encountered in childhood became part of the fabric of their scientific selves. In two major essays that frame the collection, Turkle tells a story of inspiration and connection through objects that is often neglected in standard science education and in our preoccupation with the virtual. The senior scientists' essays trace the arc of a life: the gears of a toy car introduce the chain of cause and effect to artificial intelligence pioneer Seymour Papert; microscopes disclose the mystery of how things work to MIT President and neuroanatomist Susan Hockfield; architect Moshe Safdie describes how his boyhood fascination with steps, terraces, and the wax hexagons of beehives lead him to a life immersed in the complexities of design. The student essays tell stories that echo these narratives: plastic eggs in an Easter basket reveal the power of centripetal force; experiments with baking illuminate the geology of planets; LEGO bricks model worlds, carefully engineered and colonized. All of these voices—students and mentors—testify to the power of objects to awaken and inform young scientific minds. This is a truth that is simple, intuitive, and easily overlooked. Introductory and concluding essays by: Sherry Turkle. Mentor essays by: Susan Hockfield, Donald Ingber, Alan Kay, Sarah Kuhn, Donald Norman, Seymour Papert, Rosalind Picard, Moshe Safdie.
